100th anniversary of the old age pension

8 Feb 2009

Shepway Lib Dems are celebrating the 100th anniversary of old age pensions in Britain. The first state pensions were introduced in 1909 by the Liberal government led by Asquith and Lloyd George.

Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Folkestone, Hythe, Elham Valley and Romney Marsh Neil Matthews said:

"The old age pension was an important measure in our history, but sadly today too many older people are living in poverty.

"That's why the Lib Dems want to see more investment in social care and more help towards paying fuel bills."
