Folkestone’s Lower Leas Coastal Park play area has delighted two generations of children over the past quarter of a century.

And with the promise of more equipment and more inclusive elements than ever before in the south east’s largest free adventure playground, an exciting new era is now just around the corner.

Having developed a quality design which will thrill children of all ages, interests and abilities, Proludic has been appointed to deliver the highly-anticipated £750,000 refurbishment project.

This preview shows how one section of the new play area – meeting the highest inclusive standards to allow users of different abilities to enjoy themselves together – will likely look once completed.

It is expected the project will be finished in time for the 2026 school summer holidays.

Following suggestions from residents, there will also be additional seating, buggy and cycle parking for families to use. All of this will be surrounded by the unique landscaping that the Lower Leas Coastal Park is synonymous with.

Cllr Connor McConville, Cabinet Member for Assets and Local Government Reorganisation, said:

“We wanted something that would make people sit back and go ‘wow’ – this incredibly impressive design with fun equipment certainly does that.

“Whether it is the excitement of being at height, the adrenaline of sliding at speed or something calmer, more sensory – this space will offer something for everyone. I can’t wait to see this new era for the play area become reality in the coming months.”

More than 1,100 people shared their vision in late 2024/early 2025; much of this feedback has been incorporated into the final design.

One of those is the use of sustainable materials resilient to its coastal environment; the manufacture and logistics of the installation will also use smart logistics and sustainable manufacturing processes.

Proludic managing director Rob Baker added:

“Proludic are immensely proud to be involved in such an exciting project.

“We share the council's focus on accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability, and look forward to installing a playground that is worthy of this truly unique coastal environment.

“Our design is packed with bespoke features, educational content and engaging play structures for users of all abilities.”

Cliff stabilisation work near The Vinery – required before the refurbishment project gets underway – is ongoing.
