The future of the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre is looking bright after a new operator was appointed by Folkestone & Hythe District Council.

Rebranded as The Nest, the building offers a sustainable, locally sourced café and retail space within the 11-hectare nature reserve designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Dymchurch resident Nicola Adam is excited to open the new venture this summer on Saturday 2 August, following Kent Wildlife Trust’s decision to vacate the facility – just off the A259 between New Romney and St Mary’s Bay – last year.

Nicola said:

“This brand-new space will provide a destination for visitors to the Marsh as well as a place for local people to come together.

“From crochet and craft clubs, gardening, pilates and parent meetups – The Nest will also support local school children in their learning journey.”

The appointment comes after views from residents, visitors and businesses about how the centre should evolve to meet the needs of the community, enhance the wider nature reserve experience and support the district’s economy were gathered.

Cllr Jeremy Speakman, who has overseen the project, said:

“We’re thrilled the site has had its future secured after a detailed process, which included invaluable feedback from stakeholders and residents.”

“The nature reserve remains one of the gems on the Romney Marsh – and with a dose of something new – we’re excited to introduce this new chapter.”

Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership, with the support of Folkestone & Hythe District Council, has continued to manage the nature reserve and will remain to work alongside the visitor centre’s new operator.

Plans for educational events and the site being made available for usage by local groups is planned.

Further details about the reopening will be shared soon.
