New UKIP Leader

13 Sep 2006

Nigel Farage is to take over as leader of the UK Independence Party. Mr Farage, a former commodities broker who lives in west Kent, is already a MEP for the South East region.

Mr Farage was elected by 3,329 votes, in an election in which just 7,405 UKIP members took part.

Mr Farage came third at the recent Bromley and Chislehurst by-election, in which the Liberal Democrats nearly snatched the previously safe seat from the Conservatives. Many Shepway Lib Dems were involved in the Lib Dem campaign in Bromley, including local agent Shaun Roberts.
